Habitat for Humanity of Knox County shows no signs of slowing down in the area building homes for low income families.
Habitat’s 53rd local home was recently opened and ground has been broke on the 54th averaging two new homes a year. But another organization that helps first-time, low-income families find suitable housing is Project Rebound. Project Rebound finds homes to rehab in the city recently showing off its 4th local home at 1361 Harrison Street. Other Project Rebound Homes are rehabbed on Grand Avenue, Washington Street, and Bateman Street. Renovated by Hillery Construction, Project Rebound is funded through efforts by F&M Bank and Midwest Bank of Western Illinois. The Galesburg Community Foundation has pledged to be a participating lender in the project’s next five homes. Executive Director Josh Gibb said that 20% of the cost will be covered by the foundation. Families seeking a home through Project Rebound must be a first-time home buyer, have good credit, and need to meet low-to-moderate income guidelines. The goal behind the program is to find families who make enough income to support themselves, but aren’t able to save enough for a down payment on a home of their own.
